How Many Sets for an Exercise?

| What are sets?
Sets are simply repetitions of repetitions. For example if you perform 12 reps of an exercise that is one set. If you then do 12 more reps that will be your second set. Not too complicated really (Could you repeat that? - Beeble).
How many sets should you perform per exercise?
This is where it can get confusing, the most popular answer to this question is usually three sets per exercise. Why? I have no idea, but like many exercise concepts in the past they stick until someone comes along with a group of scientists and proves it to be incorrect. Some people will train at five sets and others will just do the one but carry out many different exercises.img src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Beebleblog/~4/jWHuR2MD0Wg" height="1" width="1"/ |

| We have been very busy this year creating our fitness tools for you to use. Our heads have been well and truly buried over the last 5 months creating a one stop shop for you to check and monitor your health and fitness.
Why use our fitness tools
For people who have signed up for our Beeble's Fitness for Life you will already know that we provide you with a monthly exercise program for free. However if you have just been using your scales to judge the change in your body then you just might be missing out on some more accurate ways of measuring your progress. Every month when you receive your new exercise program go through our calculators one by one and note down all your results. This way month by month your training will progress as will your knowledge of your achievements.img src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Beebleblog/~4/n_EdGwrAO0U" height="1" width="1"/ |

| When designing any program it is important to decide how many repetitions are needed for each exercise. To get this number you first need to understand what your goals are. When you know what you want to achieve then you can start designing a bespoke program that will really help you reach those goals.img src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Beebleblog/~4/A5xRa5SlJzM" height="1" width="1"/ |
Don’t Arch Your Back During Exercise

| If you are a regular user of our Exercise Library then you may have noticed a training point which appears regularly in the “don't” section. It applies to many exercises and clearly states “don't arch your back”. Arching the lower back during exercise is one of the most common mistakes people make in the gym during their exercise session and it can have a detrimental effect on your progress.
Two different arches
There are not many exercise that manage to stay true to perfect technique and escape from the dreaded back arch. It can materialise in two ways: the first being the long hold where the back arches during the contraction in a slow, almost controlled manner and then relaxes again as the movement returns to the starting position. The second is the instigator of the exerciser's worst enemy: the body swing. This is where the unsuspecting gym-goer arches their lower back to create momentum to aid the movement, which again is bad technique.img src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/Beebleblog/~4/cFL5P2COsq0" height="1" width="1"/ |
Your Very Own Home Gym - for less than £55/$75

It is a common misconception that the more you spend on gym membership the better results you will get. Gym membership can be very expensive and still come with no guarantees. There is no doubt that what the gym can offer as far as equipment goes is usually far better than any home gym you could hope to create. However I have helped to design and set up many a private gym and in all honesty you can build a very good one that can cover all muscle groups with only two purchases. Not only are these two pieces able to train every single muscle in your body but they are not expensive either. In fact you could pick them up for less than £55 brand new. |
How to Bench Press More Weight - Now!
on 24. Mar 2009 in technique, Strong, weakness, wrist, workout, chest press, Top Tips, Chest, bench press, Exercise.

Everyone wants or should want to bench press more weight. Whether you are training for strength, muscle gain or fat loss, the importance of pushing yourself harder each and every training session is paramount. Therefore if you could make a small change to improve your technique and allow yourself to bench press more, you will be able to progress your body's improvements significantly.
What am I getting at?
Poor technique is often performed on the bench/chest press by many people who would not even consider that they were doing something wrong and missing out on maximising the bar weight for their goals. In all honesty in 15 years of working in gyms I have never seen anyone perform the chest/bench press with perfect technique and certainly never using the technique that I am about to share with you. So there is an obvious problem and without this information being shared there are plenty of opportunities for people to injure themselves and not get the most from their workouts. |

Feeling tired at work? Can't find the energy to keep yourself going? Are you falling asleep by the afternoon? Well, this isn't the first time that this subject has been approached and it won't be the last. In fact we covered it ourselves not so long ago and gave you some great advice on diet and your water intake. You can read these articles here. It has to be said though that in the past even if I did follow my own advice and ate perfectly and quenched my thirst regularly - by mid afternoon I would still be falling asleep at my desk. Why does this happen? |
Why Gyms can be bad for you
on 05. Mar 2009 in treadmill, sports, core muscles, free weights, machines, Leg, gym, workout, Top Tips, Exercise, Abs, Core, Health, Classes.

The biggest problem I have with the gym is that after a long day that consists mainly of sitting down, we then go to a gym to sit down and exercise in the same position. How absolutely crazy is that and completely useless if you want to improve your health! If you take a look at all the exercises, the only one that is fully effective and which avoids the seated position, is the treadmill. This is the only exercises that takes the body and uses it as it should be used through a full range of motion with little support. However even the treadmill is ill equipped to really get the most out of your body. Most people will use the argument that if you use free weights it is much more functional as the movement is not as linear or controlled as it is with machines. This is true - however it is only a mild improvement if you use a bench to lie on or sit down on to perform the free weight exercises. |
