Obesity as a Disease
on 14. Sep 2007 in high blood pressure, serious disease, exercises, Dieting, cholesterol levels, weight loss.

Obesity is the unusual accretion of the body fat, nearly 20 percent excess as compared to an average healthy individual’s ideal body weight. Obesity is linked with raised risk of illness, disability and even death. 20 to 40 percent over the ideal weight is considered as mildly obese, 40 to 100% over ideal weight is categorized as moderately obese but 100 percent over ideal weight is believed to be morbidly or severely obese.

Obesity is considered as serious disease and must be attended to on priority. Consumption of more calories than spent is the obvious reason as the excess calories are stored as fat tissue called adipose. Anyway, the exact cause of obesity is yet unknownObesity as a Disease but it is likely to be arising from the complex combination of factors. Even side effects of certain disorders and conditions may result in obesity, such as Cushing’s syndrome, hypothyroidism, neurological disturbances and consumption of certain drugs.

The significant symptoms of obesity are excessive weight gain and presence of excessive fatty tissues. Obesity may also trigger some secondary conditions like, heartburn, hernia, gum disease, raised cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and arthritis etc.

By observing and comparing the patient’s weight to the ideal weight charts, obesity could be diagnosed. Doctors may also note how the person carries excess weight on his body. Treatment of obesity depends basically on how the overweight person is and his overall health conditions. Dieting and exercises or workouts are the best treatment
